What If...?
1. What if you'd taken servants to the hunting lodge, as the seneschal recommended? (Chapter 1)
One would have been an assassin, the Hand of Lil who's still living in Surrexus. He was working in the Surrexus kitchens at the time and would have been sent as your cook. He planned to add a mild soporific poison to your food, something to make everyone sleep more deeply. That night, when everyonoe slept, he was going to let the bandits into the lodge. They hoped to surprise you while you were groggy, armorless, and weaponless, and capture you for Sir Terrens. And then...? See question #2.
2. What if Terrens hadn't fallen for your trap? (Chapter 4)
Hopefully you would have run like rabbits -- because if you didn't, he would have spanked you. But Terrens didn't intend to kill you all, even though that's what he'd been ordered to do. Terrens was too greedy. He knew that slavers from Insula Mollita would pay a premium for paladins, young clerics, and mages. So he would have sold you and told Surilla that you were dead and buried in the forest. For a while there, I thought the campaign might quickly change to "Escape from the Isle of Necromancers"...
3. What if Terrens hadn't gotten a proper burial? (Chapter 5)
He was going to come back. If the band had given in to spitefulness and left his body for the crows, Terrens would have become a ghost haunting the ford where he drowned. I figured that the next time you rode back through Lanshar's Gap, a spectral hand would rise up out of the water and grab the leg of the lead rider, dragging them beneath the waves.
4. What if Martialis hadn't been convinced that the Mysteries of Legis were corrupt? (Chapters 5a and 6)
He would have become seriously nefas. Having lost his wife and, apparently, Leyna, he would have given himself over to the addictive dreams of the Sleeping God.
5. What if you hadn't intercepted Clarissa Benobles? (Chapter 10)
You interrupted Clarissa half-way through her evening's "scheduled events." If you hadn't found and helped her, she would have gotten to the south gate and discovered it locked. Assuming that this was because of her (not you) she would have abandoned the idea of fleeing to Benobles. Instead, she would have gone down to the docks, stolen a dinghy, and tried to escape to Molossus. Her boat was going to capsize in the magical storm, and she and baby Marcus would have drowned. The resulting scandal would have enraged the Tillafords and set Benobles firmly against the Surrexus rebels (who would have been blamed for Clarissa's death). Magnus Tillaford would also have tried to blame the Molossi for this in part; I hadn't yet worked out whether or not Tillaford would use this as an excuse to invade.
6. What if Severus and Gaius hadn't interrupted each other while talking to the Elves? (Chapters 15 and 16)
A slip of the tongue(s) made a world of difference in Chapter 15/16. Gaius mentioned "the Sebetu" at the same moment that Severus said that Theodosius had "an iron crown." Since the Elves knew that one of the Sebetu was an iron crown, that coincidence unnerved them enough to make them listen to you. Had this not occurred, it would have been very difficult to make them take you seriously. The Elves intended to reassure you that everything was alright (on the Sebetu front) and make sympathetic noises about the mess in Rostilla. Then they would have shooed you out of the Northwoods and never bother to talk to Loviatar, the Watcher who is supposed to be protecting the Sebetu.
7. What if you'd looked a little more (or a little less) useful to the Praetor? (Chapter 17)
The conversation with Praetor Ferreus may have seemed like a pleasant, simple chat. In fact, it was critical to convince the Praetor that you were useful... but not too useful. If you'd come off as vapor-headed rebels who didn't have a snowball's chance of overthrowing King Albanus, Ferreus would have had you arrested. Once you were in the Carcer, he'd have shopped around to find who would give him the best price for you. Who knows, maybe he could have convinced King Albanus to re-start the tribute if he handed you over. On the other hand, looking too valuable was just as bad. Ferreus knows that General Martialis worships his daughter Leyna. He seriously considered arranging to have Leyna kidnapped "secretly", for with her as his hostage, he'd have the General by the balls. Fortunately, neither Ferreus nor Cassius was able to determine whether or not Leyna was still on good terms with her father (or if they'd fallen out over her "rebellion"). And the Surrexi hinted that they had a way to get their uncle's assistance. In the end, with some reluctance, Ferreus decided to just be reasonable. The Surrexi weren't hopeless.. and there was no sense trashing his relationship with them for a chance that General Martialis still cared about his "rebel" daughter. So this was the week where you avoided both the "Escape from the Carcer" and the "Rescuing Leyna" adventures.
8. What if you hadn't killed the retriever hiding in the Order's hidden vaults? (Chapter 18)
Once it had Lucellus in its grasp, the retriever was going to step into the etherial plane and trot back to Theodosius. You would have had several months to rescue him, as Theodosius corrupted and broke him. But after that, Theodosius would have had one kick-ass lieutenant. The Order would have had no Council Blades to summon and unite them. And the former Grand Master would have had a very intriguing question to consider: if you can send corrupting dreams with one Council Blade, what can you do with two?
9. What if you hadn't gone to Hakarim?
Theodosius would have dispatched the liche Atemorex (who was still a bit groggy after his millenia-long sleep) and established himself as the lord of Hakarim. After that, he'd bind his soul to Hakarim's gatehead and allow the Effluvia to wash over the bodies in the Vault. Strengthened by the power of thousands of souls, everybody's favorite Grand Master would have Ascended and become the fifth "Hand" of the Sleeping God. Though even this cloud had a silver lining, of sorts. Viridia would have woken up to discover that they had a budding necromantic kingdom bubbling up on their doorstep -- which would have put Rostilla farther down the Empire's "to do" list.
10. What if Marius hadn't spotted Baria Corresanti at the Council of the Order of St. Cavallius?
Sir Stannus proved most difficult to enspell and the poor nefas sorceress had to blow most of her daily allotment of suggestions to get him to assault Pontifex Orosius. So she only managed to get two suggestions to land: those on Stannus and Tinnius. Stannus would have pounded the snot out of Orosius who, as you might expect, would have run wailing and crying to the Empress about his abuse. (Empress Mara Gentillia grew up in Lex Legis, an orphanage run by the Temple of Legis, and is somewhat fond of Orosius. Or, was fond of him.) Meanwhile Tinnius would have returned to the Surrexus villa and composed a stern letter (to be sent in secret, "so as not to worry his brothers unnecessarily", as Baria put it) warning the Empress of the evils that came of denying Dulcea her due worship and urging her to lift the ban on her faith. The letter would have arrived a few hours after the Empress spoke to Orosius and would have enraged her. She would have had Tinnius arrested and, when he could not honestly say that the letter was false, the Empress would have had him executed for heresy. Worse, that -- combined with today's "innovations" in the Order -- would have made her uneasy about the Order as a whole. How far had Tinnius' heresy corrupted them? And so the Empress would have ordered the Praetor to close the city gates and round up all the paladins in town. Those who could swear that they supported the Empire's ban on Dulcea's worship would be released. The heretics who couldn't do this would join their 'Grand Master' in the Games. Oh, and Pontifex Orosius would have happily presided over these heresy trials.
11. What if you'd left Catarina in Rostilla after you framed Surilla?
After you framed Surilla for the abduction of General Corresanti and the rescue of Sir Daciens, Catarina wanted to remain in Rostilla. You talked/ordered her to come with you, fearing that Surilla would retaliate. In reality, it wasn't retaliation she had to fear: it was promotion. Catarina had proved too useful (or so Surilla thought); your aunt would have vented her spleen elsewhere rather than squelch this font of information. But Surilla was on the brink of deciding that Catarina had to be brought firmly into the fold. She was going to initiate her into the Mysteries of Crescens Hedonae (aka Morrash, in her guise as patron of harlots). I had a really nice tragedy planned, which will now never see the light of day. Stuck on her own, and realizing that this was a way to get unparalleled information to Severus, Catarina would have accepted initiation. She would have worked brilliantly, giving you fantastic dirt on your enemies, until the day when you overthrew Albanus. Once you were together again, she would have had a joyful reunion with Severus, congratulated you all on avenging your House... then walked back to her room and committed suicide, unable to bear the shame of what she'd had to do to aid you. Lovely angst... all gone now. Bah.
12. What if you hadn't rescued Sir Daciens?
More in a couple weeks.
